Dr. Maki was born and raised in Bothell, Washington. She grew up loving animals, but veterinary medicine was not something she had seriously considered. Her love for animals grew while studying abroad in Peru--camping in the Amazon Rainforest alongside monkeys, capybaras, giant river otters, hundreds of bird species, and so many insects and spiders (eek! Also, fun fact: spiders' eyes reflect light as dogs' eyes do!). After graduation, she spent a summer working in wildlife rehabilitation and then worked as a medical scribe, where she developed an interest in medicine and providing high-quality care. With the help of an excellent mentor, and some local veterinary assistant work, she ultimately realized veterinary medicine was her calling.
Dr. Maki graduated from Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine, and she's excited to return to the greater Seattle area. While in veterinary school, she explored a variety of specialties, but she ultimately found her passion in small animal general practice. Her professional interests include the human-animal bond, geriatric care, ophthalmology, and dermatology. Dr. Maki also values building strong, communication-based relationships with clients and providing quality, individualized care for every patient, making veterinary medicine feel approachable and understandable. She is especially excited to come full circle and practice within the community where she grew up.
Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Maki enjoys spending time with her family and her 7-year-old retired duck-hunting Labrador, Cyrus. She loves cooking, baking, and exploring different cuisines. If you have a favorite restaurant or recipe to recommend, let her know—she is always open to suggestions! She also enjoys hiking, camping, wildlife photography, and amateur birding. You may find her at Juanita Bay early in the morning with a cup of coffee and a bird book. At home, she enjoys sewing, crocheting, and has recently picked up knitting. Her hobbies help her slow down, stay present, and enjoy life's little moments.
